Brass Pin Holders, Made in Japan by Niwaki

Niwaki founder Jake Hobson first encountered kenzans while studying pruning and tree-training at Furukawa Teijuen nursery in Osaka. The tools he brought back to his tree farm in Dorset, England, became the foundation of Niwaki’s floral line. These kenzan flower frogs are still made in Japan from brass pins set into a heavy lead base, and they hold woody branches and soft green stems with equal grip. Place one at the bottom of a dish or vase, press stems onto the pins at whatever angle you like, and add water. No foam, no tape, no fuss.

Choosing a Size

The mini set (24 mm each, sold as a set of four) fits inside bud vases, the Beach Stone Ikebana Vase, or any narrow-necked vessel. They also double as candle stands—the pins grip a taper securely, and they pair well with beeswax tapers for a low table arrangement. The medium (61 mm, 257 g) is the most versatile size and sits well inside the Ikebana Vase or any standard table vessel. The large (80 mm, 510 g) anchors heavier arrangements—thick-stemmed branches, full seasonal displays—and works in wider bowls, pitchers, and hurricane vases.

How to Arrange with a Kenzan

Cut stems at an angle and press them firmly onto the pins. For thicker woody branches, score a small cross into the base of the stem first. The weight of the base keeps the kenzan steady in water, so stems stay exactly where you set them. Top up the water daily, and your cuts will last as long as they would in any vase—longer, often, because the pins open the stem end for better water uptake. Between uses, clean the pins with a soft brush (an old toothbrush works) and store them flat. Brass won’t rust or spoil the water.
